There are many characters to choose from. People like David, Abraham, Moses and Peter. One of these characters that I was able to read about recently was Elijah. I will focused on the last part of his life specifically His role in killing the priest serving Baal and his decisions after that.
In the book of Kings chapter 18 verse 22 to the end of chapter 19 we read this story. To summarize thi story, Elijah challenges the priests of Baal to prove that Baal was the true god by having fire fall from the sky and consuming a sacrifice upon an altar. After many days of praying and calling out to Baal to send down fire to consume the sacrifice it never came down. As Elijah's turn came he order for huge buckets of water be pour upon the altar drenching everything. He then proceeded to call out the name of God and sure enough God pour upon the altar fire that consumed not only the sacrifice but everything around it and all the water that was pour on it.
After all this had occurred Elijah had all of Baals' priest put to death.
So far its been a great story about the power of God manifested through the prayer of his servant Elijah. I believe that here is where his GPS has a glitch and begins to act up. Queen Jeezebel hears what Elijah had done and sends word threatening Elijah with death that very same day. Based on the accounts of the bible threats made by this queen were not to be taken lightly. So what doe Elijah do when he hears this? He takes his servant and does the Forrest Gump move, he runs. He keeps running and running and running. He stops, leaves his servant behind because he feels that his servant is slowing him down and continues to run. It was a super natural run. Reminds me of chariots of fire. Now the question is... What is wrong with this picture?
Was he not just used by God to do the impossible? Did God not just answer his prayers to send down fire from heaven? Did he forget that God was with him?
So he ran until he could no more laid down and ask God to take his life? The same man that not so long ago was in direct communication with God seems to have lost his way.
Many of us, like Elijah, also suffer from glitches in out GPS system. Many times we let small problems take over and we loose sight of what God has just done with us, through us and for us. Many times we act like we know exactly what we need when we need it and how we should get it.
I need to confess something. I don't have the best sense of direction in the world. I might get lost while driving but I do find my way out so there is still hope for me. Who do I rely on when taking a long trip or a trip to an unfamiliar place? My wife. Shee is great co-pilot and has a great sense of direction.
So here is Elijah on the floor asking God to take his life and what does God do? Give him food drink and rest. After that rest God tells him to go to Mount Horeb and wait for Him. If you did not pick up what I just said re read the previous sentence. God was already fixing and tuning his GPS. God directed him to his next destination and told him what to do.
That is the beauty of God. He not only has patience and takes care of us when we loose our way but He gives us rest and puts us back in the right path. He told elijah where to go and what to do. When the time came God revealed himself to elijah. He showed him the right path and sent him off with a fully functional GPS system.
If you feel lost then let God get you back on the right road.
GPS- God please show me, your will not mine you move devine.
